As a Service Fitter, you will be joining a global aftermarket team. The role is a hands-on Service and Assembly Technical Lead. You will travel worldwide to customer sites to install, commission, inspect and support hydrodynamic bearing equipment, and you will play a key role in our South Shields factory leading fitting, assembly, testing and continuous improvement when not on site.
What you'll be doing
- Respond to customer breakdowns and deliver effective aftersales support.
- Plan and undertake worldwide site visits; complete bearing surveys, dimensional checks and load reaction measurements.
- Install and commission new and refurbished equipment; attend sea and performance trials to monitor operation.
- Investigate bearing failures; produce clear technical reports, expenses and timesheets promptly.
- Advise customers on spares, repairs and maintenance; supervise and guide customer personnel.
- Conduct onsite risk assessments and work to customer HSE procedures.
- Lead daytoday activities in fitting and assembly; assemble the full Michell Bearings product range to drawings, SOPs and test procedures.
- Own test procedures and data capture; perform functional, hydraulic and fluid gravity tests.
- Support faultfinding with Quality; collaborate with Design on new product and product development.
- Develop and maintain risk assessments, standard procedures and documentation.
- Train and mentor team members and apprentices; support crossdepartment contract reviews.
- Drive 5S and continuous improvement; ensure cleanliness, calibration and traceability of all components.
- Inspect to drawings using micrometers, Verniers, surtronics etc.; raise NCRs and record quality data.
- Travel flexibly across British Engines sites as required.
- Work safely at all times, complying with company HSE and environmental policies.
Who we're looking for
We are looking for a time-served mechanical engineer with a recognised Level 3 apprenticeship and at least 10 years' experience in a machine shop or similar engineering environment. You read and interpret engineering drawings with ease, understand machine tools and production processes, and are skilled with inspection and test equipment. You have experience of domestic and international travel, communicate clearly at all levels, and are comfortable supervising, training and advising customer teams on site. You are computer literate, proactive on quality and 5S, and committed to Health & Safety and COSHH compliance - adapting readily to customer HSE policies. You bring an appreciation of rotating machinery and hydrodynamic bearing principles (or the ability to develop this quickly).
You hold a current driving licence and passport, are willing to work shifts and additional hours when needed and thrive when switching between global field service and being the technical lead in our South Shields assembly area.
